A slab is won or lost below the surface, so the time goes into excavation, a properly compacted granular base, the right thickness for what the slab has to carry, reinforcement where it is needed, and control joints cut in the right places so the slab cracks where you want it to rather than across the middle. If an existing slab has spalled or settled rather than failed outright, repairing the slab you already have is usually the cheaper route, and garage floor replacement is its own job again.
