Spring is the most popular season for exterior home renovations in Ontario, but it is also the most misunderstood when it comes to construction timelines. Concrete cures through a chemical reaction, not simply by “drying out,” and that specific reaction is significantly slower in cool weather.
When our crews finish a beautiful new pour and hand the property back to the homeowner, the most common question is always: “When can I actually drive on it?” The honest answer depends entirely on the temperature for the next 28 days, not just the next 28 hours.

Concrete gains its incredible strength through a chemical reaction called hydration. The cement powder and water combine at a molecular level to form interlocking crystals that lock the heavy gravel aggregate permanently in place. However, that reaction is highly temperature-sensitive.
At 20 degrees Celsius (a typical July afternoon in Toronto), hydration runs at full speed. A slab poured in these conditions reaches walkable strength in 18 to 24 hours. At 5 degrees Celsius (a typical April overnight low in the GTA), that same chemical reaction runs at less than half speed.
A slab poured on an early April morning in Mississauga will not reach that same 18-hour strength until day two or even day three. Pouring crews who fail to adjust their schedules to accommodate cool weather end up delivering weak slabs that dust, scale, or crack during their very first winter.
The good news: Spring concrete that is cured properly actually ends up stronger than a rushed summer pour. The slower curing process gives the internal crystals more time to tightly interlock. The trick is extreme patience and professional surface protection.

The 28-day mark is the gold standard in construction. This is when concrete officially reaches its 100% design strength according to engineering standards. For a typical residential project in Ontario, this means the slab has reached full load capacity. Heavy work trucks, loaded dumpsters, and heavy-duty equipment are finally safe to park.
Day 28 is also the perfect time to apply a high-quality penetrating sealer if your contractor did not include one in your package. A professional silane-siloxane sealer applied at this stage will give the concrete an extra 3 to 5 years of defense against the upcoming winter freeze-thaw cycles.
