Upgrading to a luxurious stamped concrete finish involves pouring the slab flat, and then pressing flexible, heavy-duty mats into the wet surface to leave a deeply textured pattern. Popular designs include slate, ashlar, cobblestone, and herringbone brick. Pigment is either mixed directly into the concrete (integral color) or applied to the surface (color hardener).
Custom exposed aggregate concrete installations are poured normally and then washed with a specialized surface retarder while still “green” (wet). The top paste is washed away, leaving the natural stone pebbles exposed. The result is a highly textured, rugged surface that looks like a high-end Muskoka cottage pathway.

The broom finish is what the vast majority of older GTA driveways are made of, and it remains a staple for high-quality residential concrete pouring projects. It features a slight, directional texture created by dragging a soft-bristled push broom across the wet surface.

Sort of. You can resurface plain concrete with a stamped polymer overlay, but overlays typically need replacing every 10 years and are never quite as durable as the real thing. It is always best to pick the finish you want during the original pour.
